Verbena bonariensis

Organic Vervain

We mainly know Vervain as the beautiful, airy plant that attracts countless butterflies. Not all varieties are hardy in our (Dutch) climate. In any case, ensure good water drainage in winter and cover the plants with leaves. Cutting back after flowering can also extend the lifespan. Don’t remove everything, make sure the plant can still spread. Vervain wants a sunny spot in regular soil. The tall variety 'bonariensis' is ideal for adding a bit of body to your newly created borders. This also gives the plant a good chance to spread, because once used in the border you won't want to go without it! The lower types of Vervain can be used in both borders and rock gardens. The 'hastata' types have superficial roots and want moist soil (compost). Vervain can be combined with ornamental grasses, Splendour Candle (Gaura), Calliopsis (Coreopsis) and Daylily (Hemerocallis).
