As many summer-blooming plants gradually give way to fall blooms, Anemone ‘Whirlwind’ really begins to shine. Airy white flowers with warm yellow centers appear on long, sturdy stems. The semi-double to double flowers have narrow, sometimes slightly twisted petals, giving each flower a light and almost playful appearance.
With a final height of about 90 centimeters, “Whirlwind” adds a nice touch of height to the border without looking too heavy. The white flowers sway above the green foliage and bring a touch of light among ornamental grasses and other late-summer bloomers. Pair it, for example, with asters, Echinacea, Verbena, or ornamental grasses for a border that remains interesting well into the fall.
A perennial for late summer
“Whirlwind” thrives in a spot in full sun or partial shade. It’s best to plant it in humus-rich, nutrient-dense soil that retains enough moisture but allows excess water to drain away easily.
Once well-established, this fall anemone forms a sturdy clump and reappears every year. Therefore, give it a spot where it can grow undisturbed; anemones should not be moved unnecessarily.
The flowers bloom from August through November. This means that “Whirlwind” adds weeks of fresh white color and movement to the garden just as summer is slowly coming to an end.
The plant is delivered in a compact pot. This means you’ll receive a young plant that’s already well-rooted, which you can plant directly in the garden as soon as the soil is workable.
