Detail
Some flowers really do need to be admired up close. The organic Passiflora caerulea is perhaps the finest example of this. The passion flower seems almost too perfect to be true, with its wreath of blue-and-white filaments, striking stamens and graceful shape. No wonder many people think it’s a tropical greenhouse plant. Yet this remarkable climber also thrives in many European gardens. Plant it along a pergola, fence or wall and you’ll soon create a green wall that makes every visitor pause for a moment.
A flower full of symbolism and clever design
The name ‘passion flower’ has nothing to do with romance. In the sixteenth century, Spanish missionaries recognised symbols of the Easter story in the flower’s unique structure. The wreath-like tendrils were said to represent the crown of thorns, whilst the five stamens referred to the wounds of Christ. That historical significance made the plant famous worldwide, but even without that story, the flower remains impressive. Did you know that the intricate flower structure has been specially developed to guide pollinators as efficiently as possible to the pollen and pistil? Nature has literally produced an ingenious design here.
Surprising fruits
After flowering, orange fruits may appear. This often raises the question: are they edible? The answer is yes, once they are fully ripe. The fruits of Passiflora caerulea are edible, but have a much milder and less pronounced flavour than the familiar passion fruit found in supermarkets (Passiflora edulis). That is why this species is mainly valued as an ornamental plant. We supply the passion flower as a beautifully developed, organically grown plant in a P15 pot, so that it can get off to a flying start in the garden straight away.
A plant where there’s always something new to discover
The passion flower is one of those climbing plants that never ceases to surprise. The first buds, the spectacular flowers, curious bumblebees disappearing amongst the petals – and later on, you might even come across a few fruits. You’ll spot something new every time. That’s precisely why Passiflora caerulea has been a favourite choice for years among anyone wanting to give their garden that little bit of extra character. And let’s be honest: there are few plants that spark as many conversations as this remarkable climber.
