Detail
When you think of cherries, you tend to picture a tall tree where the finest fruits always hang just out of reach. Carmine Jewel is different. This special shrub cherry (Prunus cerasus × fruticosa) grows compactly and bushy, meaning the cherries hang right at hand. That not only makes picking easier, but also a lot more enjoyable. Just pop outside, grab a handful of cherries and get on with your day. This Canadian cultivar was specially developed as a compact shrub cherry and is also self-pollinating, meaning a single plant can bear fruit on its own.
A cherry with character
The fruits are a deep dark red, almost burgundy when fully ripe. They strike just the right balance between sweet and tangy, making them delicious both fresh and when used in recipes. But let’s be honest: there’s a good chance the first harvest won’t even make it to the kitchen. Another lovely feature of Carmine Jewel: the plant is the result of years of Canadian breeding work, which sought to create a strong, hardy shrub that produces plenty of fruit without growing into a large tree. This has resulted in a variety that is now loved worldwide.
A deliberate choice for a great start
Some fruit plants are best left to grow a little longer before being planted in the garden. With Carmine Jewel, we think that’s a shame. This particular shrub really shows its best side when it’s already nicely branched out. That’s why we supply it in a P15 pot. You’re planting a fully-grown shrub straight away, which immediately becomes part of the garden. That also explains why it’s slightly more expensive than smaller pot sizes. Ultimately, you’re not just buying a plant, but also a head start.
A plant that gets a little more delightful every year
Carmine Jewel isn’t a fruit bush that reveals everything in a single season. The lovely thing is that it becomes a little more generous every year. More blossom, more cherries and more and more moments when you find yourself absent-mindedly plucking a ripe fruit from the bush. Before you know it, it’ll have become a regular habit to pop over to your cherry bushes whilst taking a stroll through the garden. And perhaps that’s why so many people fall in love with this variety.
