Salvia Caradonna - Compact - ORG

Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’, also known as woodland sage, stands out for its neat, upright growth habit and dark flower stalks. Above them appear dense panicles of violet-blue flowers, which attract bees and butterflies throughout the season. Its compact, clump-forming nature makes this sage a favorite as a structural plant in the border.

Thanks to its vertical form, ‘Caradonna’ brings line and rhythm to a border, especially when paired with roses, Echinacea, or ornamental grasses. The dark stems remain gracefully upright for some time even after flowering, giving the border a beautiful winter silhouette.

A beloved perennial among insects and people alike

This sage prefers to grow in full sun to partial shade, in well-drained, humus-rich soil. It tolerates drought well but does not like wet, heavy soil, especially in winter.

After the first wave of blooms, you can prune the spent stems back to a few centimeters above the ground. This encourages a second, often slightly smaller bloom in late summer. It’s best to leave the dry stems in place in the fall; they give the garden a beautiful winter silhouette and provide shelter for insects. Prune the plant back further in early spring, after which it will sprout fresh, bushy growth.

The flowers appear from May through August, with a second bloom that sometimes continues into September. In this way, Salvia ‘Caradonna’ adds a crisp, violet-blue color to the border for weeks on end.
