    Detail
Spring flowering, Specialty bulbs, Bulbs for bees, Naturalising

In mid-May, just as the tulips have finished flowering and the garden is taking a breather, the Spanish bluebell makes its appearance. Timing is everything — and that of Hyacinthoides hispanica is perfect. The graceful stems with their drooping blue bells fill the gap left by the tulips perfectly, and do so with a natural, effortless charm that cannot be found in any hybrid. Planted freely beneath deciduous trees, it flowers more profusely every year.

A plant that self-seeds

The Spanish bluebell has two ways of propagating: via seed and via bulbils. This makes it one of the fastest naturalisers in the bulb range. Plant it in the right spot — partial shade, nutrient-rich soil, preferably under deciduous trees — and it will do the rest. After a few years, you’ll have a dense, blue carpet that returns and grows every May.

Decorative foliage, even outside the flowering season

What sets the Spanish Bluebell apart from many other bulbs is its foliage. The lance-shaped, fresh green foliage appears early in the season and remains decorative even after flowering — it adds structure and greenery to the spot for as long as it is visible. Combine it with Scilla siberica or Anemone blanda for a longer period of blue in partial shade.

Planting under deciduous trees

Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 8–10 cm, scattered loosely for the most natural-looking effect. They grow best in nutrient-rich, moist soil in partial shade — at the foot of a tree, along a hedge or on the edge of a light woodland. Leave the foliage in place after flowering until it turns yellow. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
