Allium Cowanii has a fresh, unpretentious quality. No purple or blue like so many other ornamental alliums — just white. Small in size, with a light and airy appearance, yet it makes a striking impression when planted in a group. It flowers in May and June, just as the tulips have finished and the larger alliums have yet to appear. A quiet but reliable link in the flowering sequence.

Native to Turkey, Iran and Portugal

The Cowanii is not native to the Netherlands, but over the years it has adapted very well to our gardens. It originally grows in dry, warm regions around the Mediterranean — Turkey, Iran and Portugal. This background explains its preference for well-drained soil and a sunny spot. It is drought-tolerant, hardy and can simply be left in the ground after flowering for the following year.

For bees and for the eye

The Cowanii’s small white flowers are easily accessible to bees, butterflies and hoverflies — the nectar isn’t hidden behind long tubes or closed calyxes. In the border, it combines beautifully with other late spring-flowering plants or early-flowering perennials. Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of 7–10 cm in a sunny, nutrient-rich spot. After flowering, allow the foliage to die back and the rest will take care of itself. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.

Allium Cowanii flowers in May/June. The earlier the bulbs are planted in autumn, the earlier the flowers will bloom.

Alliums flower just after the “real” spring flowers and just before the first summer flowers, allowing you to create a garden that is always in bloom.

The flowers of Allium Cowanii appear from May onwards and will enrich your garden or balcony for 2 to 3 weeks.

The rule of thumb is to dig a hole about 2-3 times the height of the bulb. For Allium Cowanii, this means a depth of about 7-10 centimetres.

It is important to plant the bulbs at the correct depth so that they are sufficiently protected and will sprout at the right time.

The best time to plant Allium Cowanii is in autumn. At that time, the soil is still warm, which is good for root development, but it is cooling down, which is ideal for the dormant period of the flower bulbs.

Plant your bulbs before the first frost, so they have the best chance of surviving the winter.

For a nice, dense planting of Allium Cowanii, we recommend 75-100 bulbs per square metre.

Plant the bulbs about 10 centimetres apart so that they have enough space and can absorb sufficient nutrients.

Allium Cowanii thrives best in well-drained, nutrient-rich sandy or loamy soil. This white ornamental onion is sensitive to waterlogging, so make sure that excess water can drain away. They like slightly calcareous soil, but this is not essential.

The best position for Allium Cowanii is in the sun, although they will also do well in light shade.
