Most ornamental onions are purple. The ‘Jeannine’ is bright yellow – and that is precisely why it stands out. A compact, round flower head in a colour you can spot from a distance, on a stem measuring 20 to 30 centimetres. It flowers in May and June, just as the large alliums are still in bloom and the garden transitions from spring to summer. Stunning, says the website. And that’s spot on.

Discovered in the Pyrenees

Allium moly – the species of which ‘Jeannine’ is a cultivar – is native to southern Europe and North Africa. Jeannine itself was discovered in 1978 in the Spanish Pyrenees: a relatively young cultivar for an ornamental onion with so much character. You can see that heritage in its robustness: it is well adapted to dry, warm conditions and thrives in well-drained soil in full sun.

A favourite with butterflies and bees

The nectar of the Jeannine is easily accessible, making it a valued food source for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. It flowers right at the transition between spring and summer – the period when pollinators remain active but the supply of nectar is already dwindling after the main spring flowering. A group of Jeannines in the border keeps that supply going.

Planting and return

Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of about 10 cm in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. The Jeannine does not like waterlogging – ensure good drainage. For a full effect, plant 75–100 bulbs per square metre, spaced about 10 cm apart. It is hardy and can be left in the ground after flowering. It returns reliably every year. Allium Jeannine flowers in May/June. The earlier the bulbs are planted in autumn, the earlier the flowers will bloom.

Alliums flower just after the “real” spring flowers and just before the first summer flowers, allowing you to create a garden that is always in bloom.

The flowers of Allium Jeannine appear from May onwards and will enrich your garden or balcony for 2 to 4 weeks.

The rule of thumb is to dig a hole about 2-3 times the height of the bulb. For Allium Jeannine, this means a depth of about 10 centimetres.

It is important to plant the bulbs at the correct depth so that they are sufficiently protected and will sprout at the right time.

The best time to plant Allium Jeannine is in autumn. At that time, the soil is still warm, which is good for root development, but it is cooling down, which is ideal for the dormant period of the flower bulbs.

Plant your bulbs before the first frost, so they have the best chance of surviving the winter.

For a nice, dense planting of Allium Jeannine, we recommend 75-100 bulbs per square metre.

Plant the bulbs about 10 centimetres apart so that they have enough space and can absorb sufficient nutrients.

Allium moly Jeannine is a relatively short perennial that reaches a height of approximately 20 to 30 centimetres.
Its flowers have a diameter of around 5–7 centimetres.

Allium Jeannine thrives best in well-drained, nutrient-rich sandy or loamy soil. This ornamental onion is sensitive to waterlogging, so make sure that excess water can drain away. Nutrient-rich soil is important. If necessary, add some compost to improve the soil, or check out more tips for improving the soil here.

They like slightly calcareous soil, but this is not essential.

The best position for Allium Jeannine is in the sun, although they will also do well in light shade.

The Allium Jeannine is a magnificent species that you will enjoy for several years. The flowers reappear in spring and can sometimes even multiply! This gives your garden a very natural look.

The Allium Jeannine is a favourite of bees, butterflies and other pollinators. The flowers' nectar is easily accessible, so the little creatures will return year after year, just like the flowers. Great for biodiversity!

Allium Jeannine bulbs are hardy, which means that after flowering, you can simply leave them in the ground for next year.

Allium moly Jeannine is not a native plant in the Netherlands and Belgium. It was discovered in the Spanish Pyrenees in 1978.

Allium moly, of which Jeannine is a cultivar, is common in the rest of southern Europe and North Africa.

It is best to plant the Allium Jeannine bulbs as soon as possible after receiving them. If necessary, you can leave them in their paper packaging and store them temporarily in a dry, cool place.

If you wish to move them, wait until the foliage has completely died back and carefully dig up the bulbs. Allow the bulbs to dry thoroughly and store them in a paper bag or wrap them in newspaper. Place them in a dark, cool and dry place, such as a cellar or shed. Check regularly for mould or rot and replant them in the garden in the autumn.
