Detail
There is something particularly endearing about the crocus Romance. Not the grand, exuberant beauty of a purple wild crocus — but a quieter kind of beauty. A soft yellow, small in size, and yet striking in a way that warms the garden on a cold February day. The name is apt: there is a certain tenderness to this crocus that you won’t soon forget.
A botanical crocus
The crocus Romance is a botanical variety — closer to the wild crocus than the large hybrid garden crocuses. That makes it more robust, longer-lived and better suited to naturalising. It opens its flowers wide in sunny weather and closes them when it’s cloudy — precisely at the times when bees are active and can easily reach the nectar. A simple but effective mechanism.
Yellow amongst green grass
The Romance thrives anywhere: in a border, in a rockery or simply scattered amongst the grass. If you plant it in the lawn, wait to mow until the foliage has turned yellow after flowering — this allows the bulb to recharge for the following year. Combined with purple or white crocuses, it creates a warm and varied spring display that becomes more beautiful every year.
Planting
Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of 8–10 cm, in groups of at least ten for the best effect. They are not fussy about soil type, provided the soil is well-drained. In sun or partial shade — they thrive in both. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
