In the middle of spring, this exclusive daffodil blooms with a ruffled crown on white petals. And that is precisely what makes it so special: that ruffled crown. Not the smooth, sleek cup of an ordinary daffodil, but a curled, pleated edge that lends the flower a touch of the theatrical. This is a daffodil that steals the show.
In the border and in the vase
The Garden Opera looks its best in a tranquil setting – with white or cream-coloured neighbours that allow its bright yellow colour to take centre stage. Pair it with the white Narcissus ‘Thalia’ or the white Allium ‘Mount Everest’ for a colour scheme that highlights the ruffled crown. It is particularly well suited as a cut flower. Cut early in the morning when the crown is just beginning to open.
Planting and return
Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 15 cm in a sunny to lightly shaded spot with nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. Garden Opera returns reliably and becomes fuller with age. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering before removing it – this allows the bulb to recharge for the following season. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
