Some daffodils stand out for their colour. The Recurvus stands out for its scent. The Poet’s Daffodil is one of the last daffodils to flower, and at the same time one of the most enchanting. At the end of April, sometimes not until May, the pure white flowers appear with their tiny red-orange centres. And then there’s that scent — powerful, sweet, unmistakable.

A daffodil with poetic roots

The name ‘Poet’s Daffodil’ was not chosen at random. This daffodil features in Greek mythology, in the poems of Homer and Virgil, and later in Romantic literature. It has been cherished for centuries, precisely because it is different from the rest: later-flowering, more subtle, more fragrant. It grows naturally in the damp mountain meadows of southern Europe — Switzerland, the Pyrenees, the Apennines. In your garden, it will feel at home in a similar spot: damp, nutrient-rich and not too hot.

Grown in the Netherlands

Our Narcis Recurvus is grown right here in the Netherlands — organically and certified to NL-BIO-01 standards. That makes it a special bulb: one of the most historic daffodil varieties in the world, organically grown on Dutch soil. Plant it in the autumn at a depth of around 15 cm in a moist spot in full sun or partial shade. After flowering, let the foliage die back naturally — the bulb will recharge for the following year and will reliably return.

Combinations and tips

The Recurvus combines beautifully with late-flowering perennials that fill the space as the foliage dies back — such as Geranium or Alchemilla mollis. It is at its best alongside a pond, in a wet border or beneath deciduous trees. It also makes an excellent cut flower: cut it early in the morning and place it in a separate vase — its scent is strong enough to fill an entire room.
