Detail
‘Duke’ highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Duke’) is a well-known northern highbush variety valued for its early harvest, productive habit and firm, light-blue berries. The fruit has a pleasant, mild flavor and is delicious eaten fresh from the bush or used in yogurt, baking, smoothies, preserves and desserts.
One of ‘Duke’s’ most useful characteristics is its unusual combination of relatively late bloom and early ripening. White to softly pink, bell-shaped flowers appear in spring and attract pollinating insects. Because ‘Duke’ blooms relatively late for an early-season blueberry, its flowers have a better chance of escaping late spring frost, yet the berries still ripen near the beginning of blueberry season.
Does Duke blueberry need another pollinator?
No. ‘Duke’ is a self-fruitful northern highbush blueberry and a single plant can produce berries. However, planting another compatible highbush blueberry cultivar nearby can improve cross-pollination, which may result in more and larger berries. Choosing cultivars with different ripening periods can also extend your home blueberry harvest.
De juiste plek voor Blauwe Bes ‘Duke’
Highbush blueberries grow best in acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil that stays evenly moist. Choose a sunny to partly shaded location and avoid alkaline or lime-rich soil.
If your garden soil is not naturally acidic, ‘Duke’ can also be grown successfully in a large container filled with potting mix for acid-loving plants. Make sure excess water can drain freely while keeping the soil from drying out completely during warm weather.
Your organically grown ‘Duke’ blueberry is supplied in our Royaal container (P15), giving you a well-established young shrub ready to continue developing in the garden or a larger container.
How do you prune Duke blueberry?
Young blueberry bushes require very little pruning. During the first few years, focus on building a strong plant rather than shaping it heavily. Remove dead, damaged or very weak stems, but otherwise allow the shrub to establish.
As the plant matures, annual renewal pruning helps maintain a good balance between new growth and berry production. Prune in late winter or very early spring while the plant is still dormant.
Remove old, declining wood along with weak, twiggy and low-growing branches. ‘Duke’ often produces strong renewal shoots higher up on older canes rather than only from the crown. Older sections can therefore be cut back to vigorous younger renewal growth when available.
Avoid simply shearing or shortening the ends of all branches. Blueberries form many of their flower buds on younger wood, so indiscriminate tipping can remove part of your next crop.
With acidic soil, consistent moisture and sensible renewal pruning, ‘Duke’ can provide an early blueberry harvest for many years.
