Ornithogalum White Trophy - ORG

The Ornithogalum ‘White Trophy’ is not a well-known variety, but that only makes it all the more interesting. This broad-leaved star-of-Bethlehem opens its pure white flowers early in spring, when the garden is barely waking up. Serene, elegant and yet full of life.

A star with a story

The name ‘Star of Bethlehem’ dates back centuries and refers to the star-shaped flower. In many European cultures, the Ornithogalum is associated with spring and new beginnings. The White Trophy is a selected, robust variety with broader leaves and larger flowers than the wild species — even more striking, yet retaining the same understated character.

For the bees, for the vase

Early bees and bumblebees are fond of the Ornithogalum. At a time when few other bulbs have yet bloomed, this white star is already offering nectar. It makes an excellent cut flower: the white blooms combine beautifully with muscari, daffodils or fritillaria and have a long vase life. Cut the stems when the lower flowers are just beginning to open.

Planting and propagation

Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of approximately 8–10 cm. Ornithogalum White Trophy thrives in full sun or partial shade and propagates itself via bulbils — a few more each year. After a few seasons, you’ll have a dense, white spring display that looks a little more lush each year. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
