Detail
The pink variety of the Spanish bluebell has a certain softness that its blue counterpart lacks. The same graceful stems with drooping bell-shaped flowers, the same exuberant propagation via seed and bulbils, but in a warm pink colour that glows in its own unique way beneath the partial shade of deciduous trees. Spring in its softest form.
A plant that propagates itself
Hyacinthoides hispanica is one of the fastest-spreading wildflowers in the bulb range, and the pink variety is no exception. It propagates in two ways simultaneously: through the seeds it scatters abundantly, and through bulbils that produce new plants every year. Plant it in the right spot – partial shade, nutrient-rich soil, preferably under deciduous trees – and it will do the rest. After a few years, you’ll have a dense, pink carpet.
Attractive foliage, even after flowering
What sets the Spanish Bluebell apart from many other bulbs is its foliage. The broad, glossy leaves appear early in the season and remain decorative even after flowering – they lend structure and a fresh touch of green to the area for as long as they are visible. Combine the pink variety with the blue or white ones for a varied yet cohesive display beneath the same tree.
Planting and care
Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of approximately 8–10 cm, scattered loosely for the most natural-looking effect. They grow best in nutrient-rich, moist soil in partial shade. Allow the foliage to die back after flowering before removing it – this allows the bulb to store energy for the following season. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
