Detail
The website says it all, and it’s simply true: it’s impossible for anyone to overlook these flowers. The Ad Rem is rather like fireworks in slow motion — a deep orange-red, with a soft yellow edge along the petals that makes the colour even more intense. Standing upright on sturdy 60 cm stems, it catches the eye of everyone who walks past.
The name Ad Rem
Ad rem is Latin for ‘to the point’ or ‘straight to the point’. And that fits perfectly. There’s nothing fussy about this tulip. It’s large, it’s orange, it blooms late when most other tulips have already finished, and it demands attention. As a Darwin hybrid, it’s known for its hardiness and long flowering period — qualities that also make it particularly suitable as a cut flower.
In the border and in the vase
In the border, the Ad Rem combines beautifully with other late-flowering plants in warm shades: dark alliums, yellow perennials or late-flowering daffodils. In the vase — cut when the bud is just beginning to show colour — it lasts a long time. Cut early in the morning, place in cold water and enjoy that colour indoors.
Planting
Plant the bulbs between October and December, about 15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. They grow best in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. In a good, nutrient-rich spot, the Ad Rem is likely to return for several years. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
