The Tulipa Columbus is the tulip for anyone who really wants a peony but doesn’t want to wait until June. Double-filled, pink with white edges, full and lush in form — it has all the romance of a peony but blooms as early as April. And it blooms for a long time too: the Columbus is known for its exceptionally long flowering period, which makes it particularly valuable both in the garden and in a vase.
A tulip that resembles a rose
Double tulips have multiple layers of petals, giving them a full, almost spherical bloom. In the Columbus, this double form is particularly beautiful: pink in colour, with graceful white edges along the outer petals. In the sun, it opens slowly and fully — and every stage of that blooming process is a sight to behold. It is not understated, but it doesn’t shout either. It simply has a commanding presence.
In the border and in the vase
In the border, the Columbus combines beautifully with other pastel colours — white, soft purple, salmon — or alongside textural plants such as grasses and perennials. As a cut flower, it is a classic: cut the stems early in the morning when the bud begins to show colour and place them in cold water. Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of about 15 cm in a sunny, well-drained spot. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
