A small tulip with a big personality. The Praestans Zwanenburg is compact, early-flowering and a vivid scarlet red — a colour that catches the eye from the very first moment. It produces one to three flowers per stem, which gives it a full and exuberant appearance despite its modest height. The website describes it as one of the most striking wild tulips, and that is no exaggeration.
Native to Tajikistan
Tulipa praestans originates from the mountainous regions of Central Asia — Tajikistan, where winters are cold and summers are dry and hot. This heritage results in a robust, drought-tolerant plant that demands little but gives much in the garden. It thrives in borders, pots and rockeries, in well-drained soil in a sunny position. It naturalises easily and gradually spreads via offsets.
Planting and combining
Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 10 cm, in a warm, sunny spot with well-drained soil. Combine the Zwanenburg with other early-flowering naturalisers such as Muscari or Scilla for a colourful start to the gardening season. It also thrives in a pot on a sunny balcony — flowering early, making a striking display and returning year after year. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
