Detail
There are tulips in red, pink and yellow. But the Ronaldo is in a class of its own. Deep purple, almost black, with a colour that takes your eyes a moment to take in. Aubergine, so dark that on cloudy days it almost disappears into the shadows, but in the sun it glows in a way that no other colour does.
A Triumph tulip
The Ronaldo is a Triumph tulip — one of the most reliable groups in the world of tulips. Triumph tulips are known for their sturdy stems, their broad blooms and their hardiness. They aren’t the largest tulips, but they are consistent, strong and long-lasting in the border. The Ronaldo blooms in April and May on stems measuring 45 to 50 centimetres — striking enough to catch the eye, yet compact enough not to be blown over.
The colour in the sun
The Ronaldo is a tulip that craves the sun. Not because it looks bad in partial shade, but because its intense, dark colour really comes to life in direct sunlight. A deep, almost velvety sheen sweeps across the petals in a way you won’t see with any other tulip. Pair it with white — white daffodils, white Alliums, white Muscari — for a classic colour contrast that never fails.
Planting and cutting
Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 15 cm in a sunny, well-drained spot. As a cut flower, the Ronaldo is particularly impressive — that dark colour in a vase draws all the attention. Cut the stems early in the morning when the bud is just beginning to colour, place them in cold water and enjoy them indoors. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
