Detail
Winter onions are actually just ordinary onions with a head start. You plant them in the autumn, they lie dormant through the winter, and by the time the rest of the vegetable garden is barely getting going, the Radar onions are already ready to be harvested. Sometimes as early as May. That’s the joy of planning a little ahead.
Why Radar?
Radar is one of the most highly regarded winter onion varieties, and for good reason. The variety is known for its good hardiness, its reliable yield and its pleasant flavour. Not too sharp, not too mild — just an honest, versatile onion that works just as well raw in a salad as it does gently cooked in a soup or roasted to accompany an oven-baked dish.
Planting and harvesting
Plant the onions in September or October, about 2–3 cm deep and 10 cm apart, in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. They take root in the autumn, overwinter in the ground and continue to grow as soon as spring arrives. Harvest when the foliage begins to turn yellow and wilt — this can be as early as May, depending on the season. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01. Fresh from our own soil — you can really taste the difference.
