Detail
Spring flowering, Alliums, Specialty bulbs
Allium unifolium, commonly known as one-leaf onion, is a low-growing ornamental onion native to western North America. It has a much softer appearance than the tall, boldly architectural ornamental onions often seen in perennial borders.
Loose clusters of relatively large, star-shaped flowers rise above short gray-green foliage in late spring. Their soft pink to pink-purple coloring blends beautifully with perennials, ornamental grasses and other spring-flowering bulbs.
The flowers also provide a useful food source for bees and other pollinating insects.
Where should you plant Allium unifolium?
Plant the bulbs in fall in a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Good drainage is particularly important because the bulbs do not appreciate sitting in wet soil during winter.
For the best effect, plant several bulbs together rather than scattering individual bulbs throughout the garden. At only about 12 inches tall, this ornamental onion works particularly well toward the front of a flower border, in a rock or gravel garden, along a walkway or in containers.
Does Allium unifolium come back every year?
Yes. Allium unifolium is a perennial bulb and can return for many years when planted in suitable conditions.
After flowering, allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. The leaves continue feeding the bulb and help build energy for the following spring.
Established bulbs can also produce offsets, allowing a small planting to gradually develop into a fuller clump. With its manageable size and airy pink flowers, one-leaf onion is an easy way to add a softer Allium to a pollinator-friendly garden
