Daffodil - Narcissus Dutch Master - ORG

Ask anyone to draw a daffodil and chances are the result will closely resemble the Dutch Master: large, bright yellow and with a wide trumpet that immediately catches the eye. This organic daffodil has been a familiar sight in gardens for generations and is known for its vigorous growth, abundant flowering and reliable nature. It is no coincidence that Dutch Master is regarded worldwide as the classic among yellow trumpet daffodils.

The benchmark for yellow trumpet daffodils

Dutch Master has been one of the world’s most beloved daffodils for decades. The impressive flowers can reach up to 11 centimetres in width and consist of a large, slightly wavy trumpet that blends beautifully with the bright yellow petals. The result is a striking yet serene flower that effortlessly stands out without being over-the-top. On sturdy stems of around 45 centimetres, this organic daffodil easily withstands wind and spring showers. It is precisely this combination of beauty and reliability that has made Dutch Master the benchmark against which many other yellow trumpet daffodils are still measured.

An eye-catcher in the garden and in a vase

Thanks to its height and striking flowers, Dutch Master is a real eye-catcher in the border. Combine it with shorter spring-flowering plants such as crocuses, grape hyacinths or forget-me-nots for a natural and colourful display. This daffodil is also particularly popular as a cut flower. Cut the stems whilst the flower buds are still closed and place them separately in a vase of water to start with. As with all daffodils, the stem releases a natural sap that other flowers do not tolerate well, so using a separate vase gives the best results.

Planting and naturalisation

Plant the organic daffodil bulbs in the autumn in a sunny to lightly shaded spot in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Under the right conditions, ‘Dutch Master’ naturalises superbly and forms larger clumps each spring with an ever-increasing number of flowers. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering, so that the bulbs can store sufficient energy for the following season.
