Helleborus Orientalis - Compact - ORG

Helleborus orientalis, also known as the spring rose, blooms at a time when the rest of the garden is only just beginning to wake up. Starting in late winter, pink, cup-shaped flowers appear among the sturdy dark-green foliage. It is precisely this early blooming that makes this perennial so special. When the first bumblebees become active on mild winter and spring days, there are still very few flowers to be found. Helleborus then serves as a valuable early food source while also bringing color to a spot where the garden is often still quiet and bare.  

Looks beautiful in a sheltered spot in partial shade

Helleborus orientalis thrives in light to partial shade, for example under deciduous shrubs, along a hedge, or at the edge of a sheltered border. Provide it with humus-rich, nutrient-dense soil that retains sufficient moisture but allows excess water to drain away easily. Once well-established, the plant slowly forms a sturdy clump about 30 to 50 centimeters tall. Because deciduous trees and shrubs are still bare in winter, the Helleborus naturally receives more light during flowering. When the foliage closes in later in the spring, the plant is actually somewhat more sheltered from the bright summer sun.

Beautiful green foliage even after flowering

After flowering, the sturdy, leathery foliage remains attractive for a long time. In mild winters, much of it stays green. You can remove older or damaged foliage at the end of winter, just before the new flowers become clearly visible. This gives the flowers more room and makes the plant look fresh right away. Hellebores do not like to be moved often. Therefore, choose a nice spot right away where it can remain undisturbed for years. Over the years, the clump becomes fuller and more and more flowers appear. The plant is delivered as a young, well-rooted plant in a compact P9 pot. Water thoroughly after planting so the roots can establish themselves well.
