Detail
‘Pink Delight’ brings a soft but striking shade of pink to the summer garden. Its long flower panicles are made up of many small fragrant blooms, creating a generous source of nectar that draws butterflies, bees and other pollinating insects on warm days. Flowering begins in summer and can continue into early fall. The bright pink blooms stand out beautifully against the plant's gray-green foliage and gently arching stems. Removing faded flower clusters keeps the shrub looking fresh and can encourage additional blooms.
Where should you plant Pink Delight?
Choose a sunny, warm location with well-drained soil. Butterfly bushes flower best with plenty of sunlight. A somewhat sheltered location is useful because mature shoots can become long and may be affected by strong winds. Once established, Buddleja is relatively tolerant of dry conditions, but poorly drained or persistently wet soil should be avoided. ‘Pink Delight’ typically grows around 6 to 10 feet tall if allowed to develop freely. Annual spring pruning keeps the shrub more manageable and encourages vigorous new flowering shoots. Your organically grown ‘Pink Delight’ is supplied in our Generous container (P15).
Why does butterfly bush attract so many butterflies?
Each flower spike is made up of many small tubular flowers containing nectar. Butterflies can feed from these flowers easily, while bees, bumblebees and other pollinators also visit regularly. For the greatest value to wildlife, grow ‘Pink Delight’ alongside other flowering plants that bloom before, during and after its main flowering season.
How do you prune Pink Delight butterfly bush?
‘Pink Delight’ flowers on new growth produced during the current season. In early spring, after the risk of severe cold has passed, cut the previous year's stems back to a low framework. Leave a few healthy buds on the strongest stems. The shrub will quickly produce fresh new shoots, and these carry the flowers later in summer. Remove any dead, weak or damaged wood at the same time. Deadheading faded flower spikes during summer improves the plant's appearance and may encourage another flush of flowers.
