Creeping Phlox - Phlox sub. Scarlet Flame - Compact - ORG

Phlox subulata ‘Scarlet Flame’ adds a rosy-red hue to the garden in the spring. Above the fine, evergreen foliage, dense clusters of reddish-pink flowers with a dark red center appear, almost completely covering the foliage for weeks. The result is a low, dense cushion of color that remains green even in winter.

Thanks to its creeping growth habit, ‘Scarlet Flame’ is ideal for rock gardens, along a low wall, or as the edge of a border. It also looks beautiful alongside a garden path, where it slowly spreads into a low, flowering carpet.

A perennial for rock gardens and borders

This phlox prefers to grow in full sun, in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It likes soil that’s on the dry side and does not tolerate wet feet well, so preferably choose a spot where excess water drains away easily.

After flowering, you can prune the plant back to just above the ground. This keeps it compact and dense, and ensures an even fuller carpet of flowers the following season. Otherwise, ‘Scarlet Flame’ requires little maintenance: once established, it is hardy, drought-tolerant, and grows almost on its own. If you want to propagate it, you can do so by dividing the plant in March or by taking cuttings in late spring to early summer.

The flowers bloom from April through June. This way, Phlox subulata ‘Scarlet Flame’ adds a fiery rose-red accent to the garden right at the transition from spring to summer.

The plant is delivered in a compact pot. This means you’ll receive a young, already-rooted plant that you can plant directly in the garden as soon as the soil is workable.
