There are tulips that need a story. And there are tulips that are simply good. The Purple Prince is of the latter sort. ‘A fine, sturdy purple Triumph tulip,’ says the website – and that is exactly what it is. No exaggeration, no marketing spiel. Just a reliable, elegant purple tulip that blooms in mid-spring and looks right at home in any garden.
Purple as an anchor in the border
Purple is one of the most versatile colours in the spring garden. The Purple Prince works well alongside white (Narcissus ‘Thalia’, Allium ‘Mount Everest’), alongside yellow (late daffodils, Tulipa ‘Tarda’), alongside pink (Columbus, Big Love) and alongside deeper shades such as ‘Ronaldo’. It calms a busy border and adds structure to a colourful mix. Plant it in groups of seven or more for the best effect.
Planting and care
Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 15 cm in a sunny, well-drained spot. As a Triumph tulip, the Purple Prince is sturdy and wind-resistant – it does not require a sheltered spot. In a nutrient-rich spot, it is likely to return for several years. As a cut flower, cut the stems early in the morning when the bud is just beginning to colour. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
