There are tulips that are simply beautiful. And there are tulips that carry a special meaning. The Freedom Flame belongs to the latter category. On 5 May 2020 – exactly 75 years after the end of the Second World War in the Netherlands – this tulip was officially christened as a symbol of freedom. Yellow with a red stripe on the outer petals, it certainly lives up to its name. Tall, sturdy and unmistakably striking in the flowerbed.
A tulip for special moments
The Freedom Flame is an excellent gift for history lovers, for those who celebrate 5 May, or simply for anyone who would like a tulip with a story in their garden. But even setting aside that significance, it is a striking tulip: tall, sturdy, warm in colour and with a long flowering period. It combines beautifully with other late-flowering tulips in red or white, or alongside early-flowering perennials in yellow and green.
Planting and care
Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 15 cm in a sunny, well-drained spot. As a robust tulip, it is highly resistant to wind and the elements. In a good, nutrient-rich spot, it is likely to return for several years. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01 – the cultivation method is also a conscious choice to support soil health and biodiversity.
