Detail
The Anemone Blanda isn’t the most showy plant in the garden — and that is precisely its charm. The star-shaped flowers are small, but when they appear in a cluster on a cool March morning, the effect is almost surreal. A carpet of blue, swaying in the wind, beneath a tree that is still bare. This is spring in its purest form.
Small tuber, big character
The Anemone Blanda does not grow from a bulb but from a small, irregularly shaped tuber. That tuber may not look impressive when it arrives, but don’t underestimate it. Once in the ground, it knows exactly what to do: take root, overwinter and sprout in early spring. Soak the tuber in lukewarm water for a few hours before planting — this will help it get off to a quicker start.
A ground cover that spreads on its own
Anemone Blanda is naturally at home in light woodlands and on rocky slopes around the Mediterranean. In the garden, this translates to a preference for partial shade and well-drained soil — at the foot of a tree, along a hedge or in a shaded border. It propagates via runners and seed, and slowly but surely fills a spot. After a few years, you’ll have a dense, natural carpet of blue that requires no maintenance.
Planting and care
Plant the tubers in autumn at a depth of 5–8 cm, with the rounded side facing upwards — or simply lay them flat if you’re not sure. Scatter them loosely for the most natural effect possible. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
