Detail
The website describes it beautifully: the people’s favourite amongst spring-flowering plants. And that’s exactly right. Camassia Quamash isn’t fussy, isn’t difficult and isn’t demanding. It’s at home in a wildflower meadow, in a border, along a ditch or at the edge of a pond, and it flowers reliably and beautifully in May and June. A lovely treat for the bees, says the website. Very little work for the gardener. Just enjoy it.
Native American flower
Camassia Quamash is a North American prairie lily that has been used as food by indigenous peoples for centuries. The tuber is edible and was once an important food source for the indigenous peoples of the North American West. In the garden, it is an equally valuable addition: a radiant blue, with a naturalistic appearance and perfectly at home in a wild, romantic border.
Suitable for any spot in the garden
The Quamash is the smaller sister of the larger Camassia Leichtlinii – with a more compact stem, but just as bee-friendly and just as versatile. It thrives in moist to normal soil, in full sun or partial shade. It looks its best by the water’s edge, but also looks stunning in a dry border or wildflower meadow. Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of about 10 cm and leave them to their own devices.
Returns year after year
Once planted, Camassia Quamash reliably returns every year. It is hardy, requires little maintenance and spreads slowly via offsets. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering before removing it. Combined with other late spring-flowering plants such as Allium or Leucojum, it provides a continuous flowering period lasting well into June. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
