Detail
It is no coincidence that the Christophii is called ‘Star Look’. The flower heads are made up of dozens of tiny star-shaped florets which, together, form a perfect sphere, sometimes as much as 25 centimetres in diameter. Standing on 50-centimetre-long stems, it looks like a purple planet in a green expanse in the border. And once it has finished flowering, the seed head remains — dry, brown and still well worth seeing.
Native to Central Asia
Allium christophii is native to Turkey, Iran and Central Asia — dry, stony regions with hot summers and cold winters. This explains its preference for well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and a sunny position. Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 15 cm and 20–30 cm apart. After flowering, they can be left in the ground — they are hardy and will return of their own accord the following year. Bees and butterflies love them: the nectar is easily accessible and the flowering period lasts two to four weeks.
Endless enjoyment
Even after the colour has gradually faded, the plant remains a striking feature. The spent flower heads dry beautifully and retain their characteristic spherical shape for months on end. In borders, they provide structure and height, whilst they are just as decorative in dried flower arrangements. This is precisely why Allium Christophii is so popular with gardening enthusiasts who like to choose plants that add something to the garden for more than one season. From the first flower buds in spring to the graceful seed heads in late summer: this ornamental onion continues to surprise, long after most flowers have finished flowering.
