When the Allium ‘Purple Sensation’ is in bloom, the garden stands still. Its large, perfectly spherical flower, a deep violet-purple colour, sitting atop a straight, sturdy stem nearly a metre tall, is one of the most impressive sights of the gardening season. It flowers in May and June — just as the tulips have finished blooming — and thus takes over seamlessly.

Position and combinations

Plant the Allium Purple Sensation in autumn, from September to November, at a depth of around 15 cm and 20 cm apart. It thrives in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Combine it with geraniums, salvia, roses or late-flowering tulips for a classic garden scene. After flowering, the seed heads remain decorative — even when dry, they look stunning in a vase.

Organically grown

Our Allium Purple Sensation is organically grown in Dutch soil and certified with the NL-BIO-01 quality mark. Grown without artificial fertilisers or chemical pesticides — with respect for the soil, the ecosystem and the bees that love it.

Allium Purple Sensation flowers in May/June. The earlier the bulbs are planted in autumn, the earlier the flowers will bloom.

Alliums flower just after the “real” spring flowers and just before the first summer flowers, allowing you to create a garden that is always in bloom.

The flowers of Allium Purple Sensation appear from May onwards and will enrich your garden or balcony for 3 to 4 weeks.

The rule of thumb is to dig a hole about 2-3 times the height of the bulb. For Allium Purple Sensation, this means a depth of about 15 centimetres.

It is important to plant the bulbs at the correct depth so that they are sufficiently protected and will sprout at the right time.

The best time to plant Allium Purple Sensation is in autumn. At that time, the soil is still warm, which is good for root development, but it is cooling down, which is ideal for the dormant period of the flower bulbs.

Plant your bulbs before the first frost, so they have the best chance of surviving the winter.

For a nice, dense planting of Allium Purple Sensation, we recommend 30-40 bulbs per square metre.

Plant the bulbs about 15-20 centimetres apart so that they have enough space and can absorb sufficient nutrients.

The Purple Sensation is available to order on our website from January to November, or until it is sold out.

We deliver Allium Purple Sensation from September to December.

The stems of the Allium Purple Sensation grow to a height of approximately 70 to 80 centimetres.

The purple, spherical head has a diameter of around 10 centimetres.

Allium Purple Sensation thrives best in well-drained, nutrient-rich sandy or loamy soil. This ornamental onion is sensitive to waterlogging, so make sure that excess water can drain away. Nutrient-rich soil is important. If necessary, add some compost to improve the soil, or check out more tips for improving the soil here.

They like slightly calcareous soil, but this is not essential.

The best position for Allium Purple Sensation is in the sun, although they will also do well in light shade.

The Allium Purple Sensation is a magnificent species that you will enjoy for several years. The flowers reappear in spring and can sometimes even multiply! This gives your garden a very natural look.

The Allium Purple Sensation is a favourite of bees, butterflies and other pollinators. The flowers' nectar is easily accessible, so the little creatures will return year after year, just like the flowers. Great for biodiversity!

Allium Purple Sensation bulbs are hardy, which means that after flowering, you can simply leave them in the ground for next year.

It is best to plant the Allium Purple Sensation bulbs as soon as possible after receiving them. If necessary, you can leave them in their paper packaging and store them temporarily in a dry, cool place.

If you wish to move them, wait until the foliage has completely died back and carefully dig up the bulbs. Allow the bulbs to dry thoroughly and store them in a paper bag or wrap them in newspaper. Place them in a dark, cool and dry place, such as a cellar or shed. Check regularly for mould or rot and replant them in the garden in the autumn.
