Detail
Some spots in the garden are simply tricky. Not enough sun, too many tree roots, or a border where hardly anything seems to catch on. That’s exactly where the Spanish Bluebell feels at home. This organic bluebell flowers in April and May with graceful, white bell-shaped flowers on sturdy stems and thrives surprisingly well in the shade. What’s more, it’s a valuable source of food for wild bees, bumblebees and other pollinators that are in full swing in mid-spring.
Shade? No problem
Whilst many spring-flowering plants prefer the sun, the Spanish Bluebell thrives in partial shade and shade. Plant the organic bulbs under trees, along a hedge or amongst shrubs, and you’ll see that forgotten corner suddenly become well worth the effort. The sturdy, upright flower stems give the plant a neat appearance and remain standing tall, even if spring turns out to be a bit wetter or windier. Group a few bulbs together or plant a few more straight away. That’s when the effect really comes into play.
A sea of white flowers that grows larger every year
Give this bluebell a spot with well-drained, humus-rich soil and it will take care of the rest itself. Under the right conditions, the bulbs naturalise easily and form an ever-thicker carpet of white flowers every spring. Not only does this look stunning, but it also brings more life to the garden. The open flowers provide nectar for wild bees, bumblebees and other pollinators at a time when many trees are just coming into leaf and food is not yet readily available everywhere.
Plant them and enjoy them for years to come
Plant the bulbs in the autumn at a depth of about 10 centimetres and allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering. This allows the bulb to store energy for the following spring. The 100% organically grown flower bulbs grow naturally, with a focus on soil health, biodiversity and a healthy habitat for insects. Planting them once is often enough. After that, they just get more beautiful every spring.
