Detail
The name says ‘black’, but the flower is creamy white. That seems contradictory, until you realise that ‘nigrum’ refers to something quite different: the dark ovules at the heart of each flower. Those tiny black dots provide the contrast that makes the white umbels of Allium Nigrum so special; delicate, dark and just noticeable enough to stand out without being too obtrusive.
Hemisphere-shaped and elegant
Whereas most alliums form perfect spheres, the Nigrum opts for a hemispherical umbel. Broadly fanned out, with an airy structure, each little flower sits on its own tiny stem. On stems measuring 60 to 80 centimetres, this umbel stands tall enough to rise above most perennials. Pair it with Allium Christophii or Allium Mount Everest for a varied white-and-cream ensemble, or with dark blue Salvia for a striking contrast.
After flowering
Once the flowers have finished blooming, the next delight begins. The seed heads of Allium Nigrum are sturdy, decorative and remain standing for months. Even when dried, they look lovely in a vase or in the border, where they maintain the structural integrity of the garden throughout autumn and winter. Simply leave them in place; they will eventually fall over of their own accord.
Planting and care
Plant the bulbs in autumn, 10–15 cm deep, in a sunny, nutrient-rich spot with well-drained soil. Allium Nigrum is sensitive to waterlogging – ensure good drainage. In a suitable spot, it will return faithfully every year and become fuller with age. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
