Liatris Spicata - Compact - ORG

Liatris spicata, also known as beaded liatris, knotted liatris, or lamp cleaner, stands out for its distinctive inflorescence: the dense, purple flower spikes are among the few perennials that open from top to bottom. Above the narrow, grass-like foliage, the straight stems rise proudly, instantly adding a vertical accent to the border. Bees and butterflies flock to the flowers in large numbers, and Liatris also makes an excellent cut flower for vases.

Thanks to its sleek, upright form, this plant fits well among ornamental grasses or in an informal, prairie-style planting. Plant it preferably in groups: this allows the vertical effect to shine and creates a vibrant display of purple flower spikes.

A bee magnet with a vertical accent

Liatris spicata prefers full sun, though it will tolerate light partial shade. Provide it with light, well-draining soil that may be slightly moist but not wet in winter.

Pruning is minimal: you can remove spent flower spikes as soon as they start to fade, though they remain decorative even after blooming has ended. In early spring, cut back the dead stems to just above the ground. Every three to four years, you can divide the tuberous rhizomes in the spring, which enhances the plant’s flowering ability.

The flowers appear from July through August. Liatris spicata thus adds a vibrant, vertical splash of color to the border for months on end, right in the heart of summer.
