• When should you plant dinnerplate dahlia tubers?
  After the Ice Saints, in mid-May, once the risk of night frost has passed. For earlier flowering, you can start the tubers indoors as early as March in a pot in a bright, frost-free spot.
• How deep should you plant dinnerplate dahlia tubers?
  At a depth of 10 to 15 centimetres, with the eyes facing upwards. Space the plants 60 centimetres apart. Choose a nutrient-rich, well-drained spot in full sun.
• Do dinnerplate dahlias need a stake?
  Yes, especially for tall varieties of 80 centimetres and above. The large, heavy flowers can cause the stem to bend or topple over in the wind. Place a sturdy stake next to the plant when planting and tie the stem loosely to it as the plant grows.
• How big do the flowers of a dinnerplate dahlia grow?
  The flowers can reach a diameter of 15 to over 25 centimetres, depending on the variety, the growing position and the care they receive. They grow largest in a sunny, nutrient-rich spot with plenty of water and regular applications of organic fertiliser.
• Do you need to store the tubers over winter?
  Yes. Dig the tubers out of the ground after the first frost, leave them to dry, and store them in a frost-free, dry place – a box lined with newspaper in the cellar works perfectly. Plant them back in the ground in the spring.
