Detail
White is the colour that brings everything to rest. And when that white sits on a stem over a metre tall, in a perfect bulb fifteen centimetres in diameter, it’s not just tranquillity but a statement. The Allium Mount Everest is the snow-white counterpart to the purple Gladiator and Purple Sensation — just as impressive, just as tall, but with a calmness that works in any border.
A Dutch hybrid with a name to remember
The Mount Everest is not a wild species but a cultivated cross between Allium stipitatum from Central Asia and Allium hollandicum from Iran and Kyrgyzstan. Developed in the Netherlands in 1993 by A. Langedijk — a name that carries weight in the world of bulbs. Cut-flower growers have loved it for years: the stems are straight, sturdy and long, and the white bulbs last for weeks in a vase. It is just as valuable in the border.
Combining in the garden
Mount Everest combines beautifully with deep purple varieties such as Allium Purple Sensation or Allium Gladiator — white and purple side by side create a classic and striking garden scene. It also looks lovely alongside pink or lilac perennials such as Salvia, Geranium or Astrantia. Plant the bulbs in autumn, 15 cm deep and 15–25 cm apart, in a sunny, well-drained spot.
For bees and the vase
The nectar of the Mount Everest is readily available, making it a valued food source for bees and butterflies in May and June. After flowering, you can leave the seed heads in place — they are decorative and look lovely dried in a vase. The bulbs are hardy and can be left in the ground; they will reliably return the following year. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
