• What is the difference between a collarette dahlia and other dahlias?
  A collarette dahlia has an open centre, surrounded by an outer row of large petals and an inner row of shorter, narrower petals — the ‘collar’. This open centre makes the flower particularly suitable for bees and butterflies, which find it harder to reach the pollen in closed or double dahlias.
• When do collarette dahlias flower?
  Collarette dahlias flower from July until the first frost in autumn, sometimes well into October or November. The more often you deadhead the flowers, the longer and more profuse the flowering period will be.
• Are collarette dahlias suitable for a pot or balcony?
  Yes, collarette dahlias remain compact, growing to around 50 to 60 centimetres in height, making them ideal for a large pot or planter on a balcony or patio. Choose a pot at least 30 centimetres deep and ensure good drainage.
• When should you plant collarette dahlia tubers?​
  Plant the tubers outdoors from mid-May, after the Ice Saints, once the risk of night frost has passed. You can start them off indoors in a pot from early March for slightly earlier flowering.
• Are collarette dahlias hardy?
  No, dahlias are sensitive to frost. Dig up the tubers after the first night frost or when the foliage begins to die back, and store them in a dry, frost-free, dark place at around 5 to 10 degrees Celsius until you can plant them again next spring.
